Quoting again from the Milford Times:

"Mrs. McBratney's building located just north of the store was soon in flames.  The Bert Openos occupied the first floor and their goods were promptly removed.  Mrs. McBratney lived on the second story and lost almost all of her household goods and clothing.  C. H. Adams' household goods were nearly all taken out of the house and the house and barn were saved by the hardest kind of fighting.  At the same time the meat market building just east of the store belonging to C. H. Adams was burning and J. S. Lane's stock and household goods were removed to a place of safety; the building belonging to William Needham was also saved by the hardest kind of fight.   Other buildings on fire and put out were Mrs. McBratney's barn, Asa Waterman's house and Bert Skank's house..."

The photo below shows two of the buildings east of the store, each with fire damage on its west (left) side.  Note the man on the roof who appears to be pouring a bucket of water on some still-smoldering shingles.
