For more than a century the Armstrong family has operated a farm on the south side of M-59, in Section 29.  Here Roland Armstrong, aided by son, William Howard Armstrong, raised corn, potatoes, wheat,  alfalfa and popcorn, as well as producing milk.  Soon after World War II, they began to occupy the winter months by planing wood to make apple and potato crates for sale to other farmers.  This venture proved successful and, in the 1948, father and son formed a partnership to provide an expanding variety of specialized wood milling services.  The photo below, taken in 1946, shows Howard Armstrong operating a belt-driven planer powered by a John Deere tractor.  Note the pile of wood shavings, with corn in the field behind.
