On December 26, 1833, a group of early pioneers met at Jesse Tenny's log cabin to form a Baptist church - the first of any denomination in fledgling Highland Township. A written covenant was prepared and signed by twelve settlers, i.e., Daniel Dunham, Harriet Dunham, Eli Lee, Mindwell Lee, Isaiah J. Hudson, Mary Hudson, Jesse Tenny, Thankful Tenny, Noah P. Morse, Elizabeth W. Morse, John C. Morse and Harriet W. Morse. An invitation was then extended to other churches in the Territory to meet at the Tenny cabin on January 16, 1834. This was attended by representatives from Baptist congregations in Dexter, Farmington and Northville, which gave formal recognition to the Baptist Church of Highland, with the Rev. Nehemiah Lamb extending the right hand of fellowship. The church's first pastor was an Elder Morrell, from Massachusetts, while the first deacons were Jesse Tenny and Daniel Dunham, with John C. Morse serving as clerk.
