The new Baptist congregation initially worshiped at the Tenny log cabin. By the end of 1834, however, services began to be held in a new two-room log school house built on the Tenny farm. A movable wooden partition separating the classrooms would be removed each Sunday to convert the building into one large room for church use. Finally, in 1847, construction began on a true church, located on the west side of Hickory Ridge Road, southwest of West Highland Cemetery. The work was completed in 1852 and the resulting structure served as the congregation's home for the next 123 years. As this 1905 photo shows, this building evidenced the Greek-revival style popular at the time it was constructed, with its pediment front facade topped by an open bell tower.
