Given that Highland's first church, school and cemetery were all  in the western part of the township, it is perhaps not surprising that its first hamlet or village should likewise be established there as well, centered at the intersection of Hickory Ridge Road and the main route between Pontiac and Howell (now M-59).  Durant's 1877 history of Highland says that Highland Corners "...was settled at an early day, probably about 1835.  Zenas Phelps and George Lee were among the first settlers of the place."  Phelps soon after started keeping a tavern, perhaps as early as 1840, followed a few years later by a store owned by David Allison.   Finally, in 1845, a post office was established - the first in Highland Township - under the name "Highland Post Office" or "Highland P.O." which thereafter served as the name for the community, as shown in this portion of a township map taken from F. W. Beers and Co., Atlas of Oakland County, Michigan (1872).
