This detailed map from F. W. Beers and Co., Atlas of Oakland County, Michigan (1872), shows that the community once boasted a shoe shop ["S.Sh.] and store run by Thomas Storms, a post office [with Alva Stockwell, postmaster], a wagon shop and three blacksmith shops ["B.Sh" or "B.S.Sh."]  The same year this map was published, however, Highland Station would be established two miles to the east along the Flint & Pere Marquette Railroad.  Within the space of just a few years Durant's 1877 history of Highland would report that "The village at Highland Station has superseded the old village of Highland Corners."  For the next several decades, however, the old village would have its "revenge" as mail intended for the new post office at Highland Station would often be misdirected to Highland P.O.   Not until 1903 was the name "Highland P.O." officially changed to "Highland Corners" in an attempt to remedy this problem.  On April 1, 1906, the name of the post office was changed yet again - this time to "West Highland" - only to have the post office close for good several months later, on October 3, 1906.
