Clara Mae Beach also became a teacher, beginning her career at the Excelsior School on South Milford Road where her father once taught.  She attended both Michigan State Teachers College (now Eastern University) and the University of Michigan, then taught English for many years at Fordson High School in Dearborn.  She was a life-long member of the Highland Methodist Church and was active in the Milford Monday Literary Club, DAR and other organizations.   She never married, but resided with her brother Sidney on the parental farm.  Following Sidney's death in 1982, Clara Mae began to write a weekly column about Highland history for the Milford Times.  These were later collected and expanded upon in her book, Our Highland Heritage, published in 1987 by the Highland Sesquicentennial Committee.  Known to many as "Highland's historian," she died January 23, 1996, at age 89, and is buried beside her parents in Highland Cemetery.
