Eugene H. Beach attended the University of Michigan, graduating in 1941 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.  He then moved to Washington, D.C. to work for the U.S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory, specializing in the development of underwater mines.   He was commissioned an Ensign in 1944 and sent to North Africa to study the effectiveness of mines deployed in that theater of World War II.  In November of that same year he married Ruby Lee Beauchamp, daugther of Wilton Avery and Sarah (Brann) Beauchamp of Hyacinth, Virginia.  Their wedding portait is seen below.  The couple returned to Highland after the war and lived with Eugene's parents while he earned his Masters and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
