This is a view of Centre Street (Milford Road) looking southeast, showing Sidney Hulbert's original store on the southeast corner of the intersection with Livingston Road.  The building was  built in 1890 by William Smith Seaver, who also ran the Highland elevator, and was first occupied by G. Ross Thompson and Albert Gonne, who opened a  store there in 1892.  In 1900 Sidney Hulbert assumed occupancy, selling general merchandise.  In 1906 Hulbert also became a  manager for the Bell Telephone Company.  The local switchboard was initially located in the back of the store, but was later moved to the second floor.   In June, 1911, however, a faulty gasoline lamp started a fire which completely destroyed the original building.
