Like so many other early buildings in Highland Station, the Methodist Episcopal
Church was built by members of the St. John family. Church historian Fred Harris
records how:
"At a meeting in Lester St. John's shop in August 1885, the matter of building
was again taken up and it was resolved to build a small church at a cost not to exceed
$1,500. Pastor Sanborn undertook to circulate the subscription and on September 5,
the money was pledged and church was assured, but with many doubts and fears. The
contract was let to Lester St. John for $1,273.00 which did not include any mason work or
painting - otherways the building was to be complete with corner tower, vane, and blinds.
As soon as the weather permitted in the spring of 1886, Lester St. John, assisted
by his brother George, began the building. Entire satisfaction was given in
everything, Brother St. John spending a great deal of time and labor in extra
work..."
The photo below shows the church as it looked around 1910, after telephones (with their poles and wires) came to Highland Station.
